The Piña Colada: a Caribbean Classic of Tropical Flavors to Excite Your Senses
There’s something magical about sipping a creamy Piña Colada with your toes in the sand and turquoise waves gently lapping the shore. I fell in love with this tropical treat at Cooper Island Beach Club in the beautiful British Virgin Islands. The cocktail was cold, creamy, and perfectly balanced with just the right amount of pineapple, coconut, and Caribbean rum—pure bliss in a glass!
The Piña Colada was born in Puerto Rico, and it’s been the island’s official drink since 1978. Legend has it that bartender Ramón “Monchito” Marrero first mixed it up at the Caribe Hilton in San Juan in 1954. Since then, this tropical classic has become a beachside staple around the world.

There’s a reason this cocktail is synonymous with island life. It’s the perfect blend of sweet pineapple juice, creamy coconut cream, and smooth white rum—all blended with ice into a frosty, dreamy drink. The Piña Colada tastes like a mini vacation in every sip.
Whether you’re lounging in a hammock or watching the sun set over Manchioneel Bay, a Piña Colada in hand just feels right.

Signature Drinks from Cooper Island Beach Club, BVI

During my recent visit to the Cooper Island Beach Club in the beautiful British Virgin Islands, I discovered two standout cocktails that perfectly capture the island vibe. The Endless Summer (left) is a refreshing twist made with vodka, lavender syrup, and lime juice—it’s floral, zesty, and as relaxing as a Caribbean sunset.
If you’re craving something a little more indulgent, the Ice Breaker (right) is pure tropical bliss with coconut rum, cream of coconut, and Blue Curacao. It’s like a frozen vacation in a glass! Whether you’re lounging by the water or toasting at the bar, these signature sips are must-tries for any cocktail lover.
Pina Colada Ingredients

- Rum
- Cream of Coconut
- Pineapple Juice
Tip
I typically buy the Goya cream of coconut in the international section of my grocery store. It is less expensive than the Coco Real drink mix and has a natural coconut flavor.
Of course, if you are in a hurry, then use the prepared Coco Real cream of coconut drink mix. All you have to do is just squeeze it into your measuring cup and pour it into the blender.

Need a great Cocktail Shaker but don’t know which one to buy? Look no further
Martini or cocktail, a good shake makes all the difference in the world so buying a cocktail shaker can seriously step up your at-home drink game. Think about it: no more settling for boring mixed drinks when you can whip up bar-quality cocktails in your kitchen. It’s not just about the fancy presentation (although that’s a fun bonus) but also about how it makes mixing drinks easier and more fun.
I have at least a dozen shakers, but one favorite. The shaker doesn’t leak; you won’t have to hit the shaker against the sink to get the top off, and the cap will measure from 1/2 to 1.5 ounces with clearly marked labels. Measure the perfect amount every time. And it is dishwasher safe!
Plus, once you get the hang of shaking, you’ll feel like a total pro, impressing your friends and yourself with your newfound bartending skills. So why not add a little shake, shake, shake to your life and upgrade your happy hour?

How to Make a Pina Colada
Bring a bit of the BVI home with this simple Piña Colada recipe.
When first opened, the coconut cream will be separated in the can. I pour it into a small-sized bowl and whisk until combined and smooth. The coconut cream can be refrigerated and kept for a week.
Add the rum, cream of coconut, pineapple juice and ice to a blender and blend for approximately 30 seconds. Pour into a tall glass and garnish with a wedge of pineapple.
Bonus points if you add a tiny umbrella!
Don’t Have a Blender? No Worries, Serve a Piña Colada on the Rocks!
If you don’t have a blender, you can add all the ingredients to a shaker half-filled with ice and shake vigorously for 20 seconds. Pour the strained contents of the shaker into a glass filled with crushed ice.
Tropical Tip: Make it Your Own
Want to mix it up? Try using dark rum for a deeper flavor or floating a splash of aged rum on top for a boozy twist. You can even toss in some frozen pineapple chunks for extra texture.
Nutty Twist! If you want a Piña Colada with a twist, swap the rum for Amaretto and you’ll have an Almond Joy.
However you sip it, the Piña Colada is all about good vibes and island dreams.

Final Thoughts
Whether you’re lounging at a seaside bar in the British Virgin Islands or blending up cocktails in your own backyard, the Piña Colada is your ticket to instant island vibes. With its creamy texture, sweet pineapple punch, and irresistible tropical charm, it’s no wonder this classic drink has stood the test of time.
So next time you’re dreaming of warm breezes and ocean views, just add ice and let the Piña Colada take you there—cheers to paradise in a glass!
