Some cocktails have a story as memorable as the drink itself, and the Dark & Stormy is one of them. This simple three-ingredient cocktail is refreshing, easy to make, and perfect for everything from summer cookouts to relaxing on the porch after a long day.

While I was visiting the British Virgin Islands, Captain Jaime shared his version of how the Dark & Stormy got its name. He told me the drink was inspired by a boat race called the Dark and Stormy Regatta to Anegada in the British Virgin Islands.

I can’t say whether the story is true, but it certainly made sipping the cocktail while surrounded by turquoise water even more enjoyable. Sometimes the best part of traveling is hearing the local stories that get passed down over the years.

Fill a cocktail shaker half full of ice.
