Margaritas Leaving You Wanting More? Discover the Mystery of the License to Chill

This Is Too Good Not to Share — Spread the Word Now:

Some cocktails just feel like a moment—and this one takes me straight back to a trip to Nashville, where I first discovered the License to Chill Margarita at Finn’s Bar. It was one of those warm, lively nights where the music spills out onto the street, and you end up chatting with strangers who feel like friends by the second round.

That’s where this electric blue margarita first showed up in my glass, and I’ve been thinking about it ever since.

At its heart, the License to Chill is a margarita—but with a playful twist of blue curaçao that completely transforms it. It keeps all the classic lime-forward brightness you expect, but the blue curaçao adds a subtle orange-citrus note and that gorgeous, almost tropical color that makes you stop and stare before you even take a sip.

It’s familiar, but with just enough surprise to make it feel special.

And let’s be honest—this cocktail was practically made for a 4th of July celebration. That bold blue color fits right into the red, white, and blue lineup, whether you’re hosting a backyard cookout, heading to the lake, or just enjoying a quiet evening on the patio.

It’s fun, it’s refreshing, and it brings a little Nashville energy wherever you decide to serve it. Find the recipes for the 5 Best Drinks Nashville has to offer.

  1. Tequila
  2. Blue Curacao
  3. Lime Juice
  4. Sweet & Sour Mix
  5. Blue Agave Nectar

Tips

Choose Quality Ingredients: The quality of your tequila will significantly affect the final taste. Opt for a premium Tequila, like Patron or El Padrino. But if you are looking for a reasonably priced Tequila, check out Sauza Silver.

And for the Lime Juice: Fresh is always the way to go, it makes a noticeable difference in a drink like this. As a quick guide, you’ll need about 1½ limes to get 1 ounce of juice. Bottled works in a pinch, but fresh really brings everything to life.

Bar Tools

Here are awesome products to help YOU make the most incredible drinks. Impress your family and friends and be the BEST Cocktail Barista in your neighborhood.

Need a great Cocktail Shaker but don’t know which one to buy? Look no further

Martini or cocktail, a good shake makes all the difference in the world so buying a cocktail shaker can seriously step up your at-home drink game. Think about it: no more settling for boring mixed drinks when you can whip up bar-quality cocktails in your kitchen. It’s not just about the fancy presentation (although that’s a fun bonus) but also about how it makes mixing drinks easier and more fun.

I have at least a dozen shakers, but one favorite. The shaker doesn’t leak; you won’t have to hit the shaker against the sink to get the top off, and the cap will measure from 1/2 to 1.5 ounces with clearly marked labels. Measure the perfect amount every time. And it is dishwasher safe!

Plus, once you get the hang of shaking, you’ll feel like a total pro, impressing your friends and yourself with your newfound bartending skills. So why not add a little shake, shake, shake to your life and upgrade your happy hour?

The Right Glass Matters

A good highball glass is one of those bar essentials you’ll reach for again and again. It’s perfect for everything from simple mixed drinks to cocktails, and a sturdy, stylish glass just makes every drink feel a little more special.

Squeeze the Day: The Must-Have Citrus Tool

Another handy bar tool is the citrus juicer. It makes measuring citrus juices like limes and lemons, a breeze. Measure the perfect amount every time.

Summer Bar Setup

Take this drink outside and enjoy the beautiful summer weather. But don’t bring glass on the boat or by the pool. Try these 20-ounce acrylic glasses (shown below). They are perfect for any outdoor occasion. Remember to put a ‘double’ 2 portions of the License to Chill in the 20-ounce glass. And add lots of ice!

If you want a single serving, the 15-ounce acrylic glasses in the photo above are a better choice.

How to Make a License to Chill Margarita

Final Sip

The License to Chill is more than just a colorful margarita—it’s a little souvenir from Nashville that turned into a summer staple. Every time I make it, I think back to that night at Finn’s Bar, the music in the air, and that first unexpected sip.

It’s proof that sometimes the best cocktails aren’t just recipes—they’re memories in a glass. So whether you’re raising it for the 4th of July or just winding down a long day, here’s your reminder to relax, sip slow, and absolutely enjoy the moment.

Cheers to blue skies, good company, and great margaritas!
