The Bourbon Gold Rush: A Blissful Bourbon Cocktail Guaranteed to Find Pure Gold
If you’ve been wanting to dip your toes into the world of bourbon cocktails, the Bourbon Gold Rush is a perfect place to start. It’s simple, elegant, and packed with flavor — a true modern classic that’s been winning hearts since it first appeared in the early 2000s.
With just three ingredients — bourbon, lemon juice, and honey syrup — this drink is proof that you don’t need a dozen bottles or fancy techniques to make something incredible at home.
The beauty of the Bourbon Gold Rush lies in its balance. The bourbon brings warmth and richness, the lemon juice adds a bright tang, and the honey syrup smooths everything out with a natural sweetness.

Even if you’ve never shaken a drink before, you can make this cocktail like a pro. All you need is a shaker, some ice, and the willingness to give it a good shake.

Bourbon Gold Rush Ingredients

- Bourbon
- Honey
- Lemon Juice
Tips
Use good quality spirits. The better the ingredients, the better your cocktail will taste. I used Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon to make my Gold Rush.
If you prefer a sweeter cocktail, use 1 ounce of honey syrup instead of 3/4 ounce.

Need a great Cocktail Shaker but don’t know which one to buy? Look no further

Martini or cocktail, a good shake makes all the difference in the world so buying a cocktail shaker can seriously step up your at-home drink game. Think about it: no more settling for boring mixed drinks when you can whip up bar-quality cocktails in your kitchen. It’s not just about the fancy presentation (although that’s a fun bonus) but also about how it makes mixing drinks easier and more fun.
I have at least a dozen shakers, but one favorite. The shaker doesn’t leak; you won’t have to hit the shaker against the sink to get the top off, and the cap will measure from 1/2 to 1.5 ounces with clearly marked labels. Measure the perfect amount every time. And it is dishwasher safe!
Plus, once you get the hang of shaking, you’ll feel like a total pro, impressing your friends and yourself with your newfound bartending skills. So why not add a little shake, shake, shake to your life and upgrade your happy hour?
Fresh lemon juice is a must for the Bourbon Gold Rush. In that case, you don’t want to squeeze the lemons by hand; it doesn’t work so well. At least for me. I recommend this lemon squeezer with grips.

Charleston Cocktail Scene
Recently in Charleston for dinner, I headed to Proof, an intimate craft cocktail bar, to check out their menu. They have many specialty drink recipes with Gin, Tequila, Bourbon, and Rye. With such a varied drink menu, I wanted to try them all.
I got lucky that night because BB Barna, a Top 30 Bartender in the U.S., was the mixologist at Proof. Watch BB make this simple yet fantastic Bourbon Gold Rush on YouTube.

How to Make a Bourbon Gold Rush
Honey Syrup
First, make your honey syrup.
Add the honey and hot water to a small bowl and stir until the honey is dissolved.
Set it aside to cool.
Gold Rush
Add the bourbon, honey syrup, and lemon juice to a shaker half filled with ice and let the cocktail sit for a minute.
Shake vigorously for 10 seconds, then pour the strained contents of the shaker into a rocks glass with ice.
Garnish with a lemon twist or nothing at all — the flavor speaks for itself.

Final Thoughts
For first-time home bartenders, the Bourbon Gold Rush is a confidence booster. It’s forgiving, crowd-pleasing, and a great way to learn the rhythm of shaking cocktails. Once you’ve mastered this, you can experiment with different bourbons or swap in flavored honeys for a twist.
So, whether you’re celebrating something special or just winding down after a long day, this golden sip delivers comfort in a glass. Raise your shaker, strike cocktail gold, and toast to your new bartending skills. Cheers to your Bourbon Gold Rush victory!
